| The West Virginia Orthopaedic Society focuses its efforts on educating physician members on the latest information in the field so they can continually improve the level of care each patient receives. The Society seeks to educate the public on safety and accident/injury prevention.
From its earliest days, the practice of orthopaedics has focused on treatment of children suffering from spine and limb deformities. The Greek roots of orthopaedics are ortho (straight) and pais (child). Early orthopaedists often used braces or other forms of treatment to make the child "straight".
Members of the West Virginia Orthopaedic Society are continuing this tradition of concern with the diagnosis, care and treatment of musculoskeletal disorders. Their scope of practice includes disorders of the body's bones, joints, ligaments, muscles, and tendons.
Before becoming members, each orthopaedist has completed four years of medical school and an approved residency in orthopaedics.
