The hospital is seeking experienced board-certified Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Specialists (Physiatrists) who will provide care for PM&R patients. Primary responsibility will be clinical with the focus on the operations of the outpatient PM&R clinics and subspeciality clinics, providing inpatient PM&R coverage in the acute inpatient rehabilitation unit. To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Additional Requirement: Incumbent must be Boarded by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) and must maintain certification in PM&R. Preferred Experience: 3 years of experience preferred Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office. Physical Requirements: Walking, bending, stooping, and some lifting in the direct care of patients. There may also be extended periods of sitting. ["The Physiatrist is responsible for providing professional clinical services to Veterans referred to Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. The incumbent physiatrist provides direct patient care for outpatient PM&R clinics and sub-speciality clinics and provide inpatient PM&R coverage in the acute inpatient rehabilitation unit and consult service. He/she coordinates the provision of care for each person served. The incumbent will provide coverage for outpatient PM&R Clinic wherein skills in outpatient injection procedures (joints, bursa, trigger point and tendon sheath injections) is expected. The incumbent can also provide coverage to PM&R subspecialty clinics which may include TBI Clinic, Electromyography/Nerve Conduction Studies Clinic, Amputation clinic, Power mobility clinic and provide coverage for other PMRs rehabilitation programs such as cardiac rehabilitation and blind rehabilitation as needed, and provide Physiatry consultation to the acute care patients and recommend appropriate rehab plan of care or appropriate level of rehab services needed, and as requested by Chief of Rehabilitation Service to provide a continuum of rehabilitation services for the Edward Hines Junior VA Hospital. - Coordinating with the Section Chief and Service Chief of Rehabilitation Service Line in engaging in strategic, resource utilization, and financial planning as it relates to the rehabilitation program.\n- Integrating the core values and mission into the rehabilitation process. - Participating in administrative and quality improvement activities.\n- Assisting administration and other staff in policy development and compliance with JCAHO, CARF and other applicable local and national standards.\n- Serving on committees as assigned by the Chief of Rehabilitation Service and Medical Center management.\n- Attending and providing input, as appropriate, to the PM&R management and other committees and councils, as needed.\n- Providing consultation to professional staff within the VA and community providers concerning clinical assessment findings and appropriate patient treatment plans.\n- Participating in weekend and holiday call on a rotational basis commensurate with other staff physiatrists.\n- Ensuring proper education of medical students and residents and collaborate with interdisciplinary team's education through in-service.\n- Participating in strategic planning for the service.\n- Actively supporting and promoting the performance improvement measures within the PM&R Service.\n- Maintaining the highest moral and ethical standards and supports EEO within Rehabilitation Service and the medical center.\n- Using knowledge of the proper infectious disease precautions and procedures, knowledge of fire safety/emergency, hazardous materials procedures, knowledge of Medical Center Quality Assurance, knowledge of the principles of information management, knowledge of customer service standards and interpersonal skills.\n- Providing the customer with consistent information according to established policies and procedures.\n- Participating in improving patient satisfaction at the service and medical center level.\n- Assisting the Chief and Section Chief of PM&R and Customer Service (Patient Advocate Office) with resolving applicable customer service and patient satisfaction requests at all levels of the organization.\n- Be accessible and available to personnel in the PM&R Service for clinical oversight as needed.\n- Other duties as assigned.
